• The Story of volleyball.lu

  volleyball.lu was born in 2000 out of a personal passion project. Francis Manderscheid, on his own initiative, secured the volleyball.lu domain and launched the first version of the website with one clear goal: to raise the visibility of volleyball in Luxembourg and give the sport the media presence it deserved.

  By 2001, the first photos made their way into the gallery — the humble beginnings of what would become the largest freely accessible sports photo database in Luxembourg. A year later, in 2002, the volleyball.lu website service was launched, providing dozens of clubs across Luxembourg with their first online presence at a time when having a website was far from obvious.

  From day one, root.lu has stood by our side as a trusted hosting partner — a relationship we are deeply grateful for and that has made the continuity of this project possible.

  Over the years, we were fortunate to attract dedicated photographers to the project, steadily growing our photo collection year after year. Today, our gallery counts over 100,000 photos online — a milestone reached in 2026 — and continues to grow with every match.

  As almost every club eventually established its own web presence, maintaining individual club websites became increasingly demanding. media4all stepped in to take over the management of those club pages under the volleyball.lu umbrella, allowing the project to focus on what it does best: photography.

  In 2025, a completely redesigned gallery was developed to offer fans, athletes, and clubs a richer, faster, and more modern experience — including the ability to purchase high-resolution downloads directly, with proceeds shared with our photographers or reinvested into the project to cover hosting and domain costs.

  volleyball.lu survives and thrives thanks to its community. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who supports this project — not only financially through purchases, but above all through the countless hours spent photographing matches, uploading images, and sharing the love of the game. Without you, none of this would exist.
